Performing Arts

Here at Queen Elizabeth School we are fortunate to be able to offer students a wide range of performing arts enrichment options, supported by excellent facilities including separate dance and drama studios, music practice rooms and a fully equipped theatre.

If students enjoy drama, dance or music, they will find many opportunities to join in, whether they want to take individual instrumental lessons, join the QES band or take part in one of the many plays or dance shows which are organised in school.

Drama

Students can participate in drama activities throughout the year, from our annual pantomime for the festive season to our whole school summer drama production.  QES has worked with the Shakespeare Schools Foundation for over seven years and has just achieved a prestigious gold status school award. We participate in their annual Shakespeare Schools Festival; the world's largest youth drama festival celebrating the work of William Shakespeare.  In November 2022, students performed 'The Tempest' at the Abbey Theater in St Albans, building their performance skills, confidence and self esteem.

Our after school drama club allows students to rehearse for upcoming productions, including our pantomime performed to our Senior Citizens and local primary schools, GCSE examination work or our summer term performance for parents.

Dance

Our dedicated dance studio allows student to enjoy a wide range of dance genres.  Students of all abilities and year groups are welcome to attend the after school dance club, where they can have fun and improve their dance skills.

Dance plays an integral part to the annual KS3 pantomime and the whole school production. Students take on a number of roles, from dancers to teaching dances to the younger students.

Music

We have been fortunate enough to partner with London Musical Theatre Orchestra (LMTO).  The LMTO introduces students to orchestral instruments, giving them the opportunity to choose and take one home to practice.  Working with our students, the LMTO supports students in playing their selected instrument, culminating in a concert performance for parents and staff.

Students are also offered the chance to attend a West End Musical to experience the thrill of the live orchestra, and hear the songs they have learnt played by the professionals.

QES is one of few schools in the country to offer Whole class band to students in Year 7. As part of their weekly music lessons students in Year 7 learn to play a woodwind or brass instrument. Students are taught by specialist music teachers, who work with students to develop their understanding of the skills needed and by the end of Year 7 are able to play the instrument confidently.

On a Monday we run QES Concert Band, the concert band is for those students who already play an instrument, or are currently learning an instrument in school. The band learns to play as an ensemble, developing key musical skills and knowledge along the way. In the past the concert band has performed for the local community in a variety of locations, including Luton Airport.

Other after school music clubs allow students to rehearse for upcoming productions, events and examination performances, including the pantomime, our senior citizens concert and our whole school production.
